Dr. Aslam is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). Alongside his teaching and research, he works as a consultant for the South Yorkshire Innovation programme (SYIP), where he supports organisations across Sheffield and South Yorkshire in adopting and benefiting from digital technologies. He has also contributed as a co‑investigator to a PETRAS-funded project that explored how to build secure ontologies for Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) systems.
Before joining SHU, Dr. Aslam developed his research expertise through roles at University College London (UCL) as a Research Fellow and at the University of Manchester as a Research Associate. During this period, he took part in an Alan Turing Institute–funded project that examined how to create secure data environments, with a particular focus on the challenges that arise when data is transferred between different technical or organisational settings.
His main research interest centres on AIoT middleware, especially how to enable smooth communication and data sharing among a wide range of smart devices. Much of his work relates to Smart City and healthcare applications. He is passionate about the potential of open IoT technologies to support sustainable urban development, and he believes smart cities can play an important part in responding to climate change. This commitment drives his efforts to encourage the use of IoT‑based solutions in urban planning as a way to build communities that are greener, healthier, more connected, and more resilient.
Dr. Aslam has published extensively, including peer‑reviewed papers and technical recommendations on IoT data quality produced for the ITU‑T. He serves as Lead Guest Editor for the Elsevier journal Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments and sits on the editorial board of Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing (IASC). His wider research interests cover digital sensing, digital twins, IoT‑enabled monitoring systems, trustworthy IoT services, smart cities, and Artificial Intelligence.
